Gary and his wife Malka are making an epic road trip from Lima to Patagonia and back to Cusco. Gary will say that it is mostly business but we all know there is a very heavy dose of vacation in there. Traveling by car means that they will see lots of new places that we can offer to our clients, check out new hotels and lodges, try some wild camping spots be be recommended, speak to our local operators and add to our product list and knowledge as they go. One particular area of new interest is the Carretera Austral, one of the most pristine and isolated areas of Latin America.
The trip will take many weeks and be a 14,000 km round trip through Peru, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. They are currently in the wine country of Chile and Gary will try to post blogs and Facebook albums periodically for those that are interested in seeing more of this amazing continent.
A resume of the projected route takes in these places:
Peru – Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Tacna – and on the way back Puno and Cusco. Chile – Arica, Antofagasta, La Serena, Valparaiso, Santa Cruz, Pucon, Puerto Varas, Chiloe Island, the Carretera Austral (southern highway)…then into Argentina: Bariloche, El Calafate, El Chalten…then back into Chile for Torres del Paine. After returning to Argentina they move up visiting some of the same places plus Mendoza, Salta and through Bolivia via the Uyuni salt flats to Cusco.
Thank God for cruise control!
