Cafayate, Argentina is not 100% about wine – But let´s say 98%!
The main focus for people going to Cafayate is obviously high altitude wine, there are dozens of vineyards within the town limits and also within a stone´s throw (or a short drive if you cant throw that far!). The wine produced in this region is spectacular with the altitude, sunlight intensity, daily temperature range and the unique Terrior producing a very complex and unique grape. People mainly come for the wine but we have found several other great things to do so you can have a short (or very short if you like) break from quaffing the vino.
You can play golf on the impressive La Estancia course, ride horse and bikes in the countryside, trek in the mountains and there are two great museums in the region, but we kept looking and also found a goat farm that people can visit. The farm and small factory is a side project for the Domingos Hermanos winery and a tour is offered where people can see how the animals are raised and managed, view the factory process, learning about what is done and how and then finally taste the cheese and buy some to take home if you wish.
As you can see from the photos you get a great close up look at the animals and you receive plenty of technical information regarding the species of goats, and how they are segregated, breed, fed etc. It may be that the guide at the farm will not speak English as this experience is not yet on the main stream circuit, but as our clients are always accompanied by an English-speaking guide it is not an issue. You are shown the milking room and various parts of the cheese production process, with an explanation of how goat cheese is made and packaged.
Finally you get a tasting of the different kinds of cheese, you can test your palate between goat and cow cheese, which is also produced here on the farm. There are different types of spicies added to the cheese and also some of it is smoked…try it and maybe take some home, or eat it later with the bottles of wine you will be opening.
